Alex snaps up first place in Thurso Camera Club competition with one week remaining

Alex Henderson has emerged as the clear winner in Thurso Camera Club’s series of photo challenges with one week still to go.

She has accumulated 72 points after nine weeks of the competition and now cannot be caught by the chasing pack.

The subject for week nine was “patterns”, with Jean MacKay and Julie Catterall tied for top spot, followed closely by Neil Buchan in third place.

The weekly photo challenge was introduced after the club’s outdoor summer field trips had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 crisis. A different theme is chosen each week and voting is carried out online.

First place gains 10 points, down to one point for 10th.

Top six places: 1 (joint) Jean MacKay, Ivy, and Julie Catterall, Purple petal patterns, 77 points; 3 Neil Buchan, Clearly stressed, 76; 4 Alex Henderson, Regular in irregular, 71; 5 Neil Holden, Spider’s web, 68; 6 (joint) Ally MacKechnie, Mic check 1, 2, and Grant Coghill, Caithness stone mosaic, 67 points.

Overall league standings after nine rounds: 1 Alex Henderson, 72 points (four wins); 2 Jean MacKay, 51 (one win); 3 Neil Buchan, 50; 4 Jane Foster, 48; 5 James Gunn, 47 (one win); 6 Julie Catterall, 44 (two wins).

Club chairman James Gunn explained: "The club's weekly challenge is a speeded-up version of the normal monthly competitions held over the autumn and winter. The members that participate are fully embracing the opportunity to keep their hobby and to use their imagination to produce eye-catching images."
