For the fifth year in a row, newcomers to golf are being given the opportunity to attend “come and try” sessions at Reay.

They start on Wednesday, April 24, for both ladies and men, and will continue for four consecutive weeks.

The ladies’ class will run from 6.30-7.30pm, followed by the men from 7.30-8.30pm. Coaching sessions are free of charge and equipment will be supplied each week.

Members of Reay Golf Club Council believe it is the perfect opportunity to try out the sport.

Club captain Carol Paterson said: “With the start of a new season and lighter nights on the horizon, there’s no better time to get started.

“Our ‘come and try’ sessions give beginners a chance to learn the basics correctly, from the get-go. They can meet up with others who are just starting out and all can have some fun out on the course.

“Our sessions have proved to be successful and we’d like this to continue. Golf is a great sport – all the family can play it.

“It’s great exercise for body and mind, super for your wellbeing, and is played in beautiful surroundings.

“I can’t believe we’re into our fifth year of ‘come and try’ already. This initiative has had a huge impact on the club and paid dividends with an increase in beginner memberships.

“Quite a few current members who attended ‘come and try’ previously are now playing regularly and really enjoying their golf.”

Julie Minchin is one of Reay Golf Club’s beginners who attended last year’s “come and try” sessions.

She said: “I first took an interest in playing golf approximately two years ago after spending my 50th birthday money on a cheap set of golf clubs so that my son Robbie, who was in the juniors, had someone to practise with.

“If I’m honest, I was unsure if I was going to enjoy it – but, to my amazement, I fell in love with it.

“One of the ladies at the club suggested I should join the ladies’ Thursday evening group, where I could meet and play alongside other beginners. I have to say this experience has been life-changing for me, getting me out exercising and having fun at the same time.

“The coaches are fantastic, teaching you how to stand, how to swing, and giving you an introduction to the golf course. I learned a lot from the sessions and it gave me so much confidence.

“Since then, I have upgraded my clubs as I truly think I’ll be here for many years to come. Recently, I’ve managed to achieve my handicap so I’m all ready to play alongside the other ladies at the start of the season.

“I’d highly recommend golf to anyone to try. As I say, I didn’t think it was for me – but I’m totally hooked.”

Anyone interested in taking part, or who has any questions, can email inforeay@gmail.com or make contact through the club’s social media pages.
