Pathway to a brighter Wick thanks to volunteer work
Thanks to the efforts of two volunteer groups in the town, parts of Wick have been spruced up with path work, weeding and litter picks.
Seven volunteers from Wick Paths Group (WPG) got together on the evening of Wednesday, August 4, to dig out turf around the Bremner Monument and the interpretive plaques on the south side of Wick Bay.
Secretary of WPG, John Bogle, said: "The turf round the new interpretive panels on the south side of the bay was dug out and tar chippings laid; the short path connecting Scalesburn to the upper North Head path was dug out and chippings laid; and potholes in the path from the boating shed to the Coghill Bridge were filled in with tar chippings."
Meanwhile, Ruth Falconer from Wick Riverside Volunteers (WRV) reported a "great turnout" for a litter pick around the rose beds beside the town's boating shed at the weekend. She thanked the paper for helping promote the WRV event.
On Sunday evening, she sent a message to the Groat saying: "We had a great turnout at the Wick riverside litter pick and tidy up today so thank you so much again for promoting it. We gave the whole riverside a good litter pick, strimmed the hedges at the fountain and gave the flower beds a good weeding too."
Another volunteer, Allan Bruce, also helped to trim back shrubs and branches that were encroaching on a popular walking route near the Wick Caravan and Camping Site.
Both groups have Facebook pages where more information is available and on how you can get involved as a volunteer. The next WPG work night is planned to take place on Wednesday, September 1.
