Reay hosted its first open competition of the summer season in the shape of the Spring Open Scramble, sponsored by RJ McLeod, with teams of three vying for glory.

The winning trio consisted of Pam Bain from the home club accompanied by Graeme Henderson of Thurso and Wick’s James Howden, and the cosmopolitan make-up of the team was reflected in the overall entry with players from all Caithness clubs represented in the field. A fantastic score of 62 for nett 58 was too hot for the rest of the field to handle, with seven birdies and no bogeys making for an unblemished card.

The home club trio of Murdo Macdonald, Alex Anderson and David A Craig took second place after a round of 70 for nett 60 which included two bogeys and a solitary birdie at the 12th hole.

Third place was taken on countback by Thurso players Cameron Reid, Tyler Gordon and Warren Gordon with an excellent round of 65 for nett 61 which included a haul of five birdies and a single bogey. There were no fewer than four other teams who matched their tally of nett 61, reflecting the excellent scoring.

On Sunday players from the home club were competing for the George Couper Challenge Trophy, a Stableford competition, with windy conditions providing a stern test. Steve Efemey rose to the challenge to win after a fine round of 80, which included a birdie at the fifth, helped him to a score of 34 points.

Lee Parnell took second place on 31, but the "birdie machine" lived up to his nickname with a brace at the 14th and 16th holes. Kenny Farmer Jnr took third place after a steady round also gave him 31 points, with Sandy Chisholm taking fourth on 30.

In the latest North Point Distillery Senior Stableford action, John Brock destroyed the rest of the field with a great score of 45 points following a round of 81. Sandy Chisholm took second place on 39 points following a round of 84, while David A Craig birdied the 13th on his way to 37 points and third place.

Jack Johnstone also scored 37 points following a steady round to take fourth, while Malcolm Thomson birdied the 14th and 18th on his way to 35 points and fifth place.

This Saturday will see the gents competing in the April monthly medal, sponsored by Nuvia, while the ladies will also be competing in their respective April medal. On Sunday the gents will be playing in the Corfin Bogey.

Entries are also open for the Ronnie Wallace Open, sponsored by Norbloc, which will be held on Saturday, April 22, with more details on the club website.
