The Newsbeat Summer League fixture was marred by dreadful weather.

ONLY the brave or foolhardy played at Thurso Golf Club in the sixth round of the Newsbeat Summer League.

In dreadful weather, only Andrew Main beat the 30 point mark with 31 points.

The following day conditions were much better, as reflected in the scoring.

Both Roddy Harper and Ronnie Gray reached the turn with 21 points with Steve Osborne and Andy Macgregor one point behind. Osborne and Macgregor were tied on 39 points after completing their rounds with the former winning thanks to the better last three holes. Mark Mackay, on 37, took third place after beating Gray with a better inward half.

Ronald Mackay, Gavin Souter and Harper all scored 36 points with Nicky Doherty and Willi Shearer a point further back.

There was good scoring in the Stableford Sweep played a week last Saturday. Colin Mackay collected first prize with 40 points closely followed by Ian MacDonald and Willi Shearer on 39. Angus Cameron was best of the rest with 36.

Round four of the Ulbster Arms Challenge Shield was played the following day. Stevie Cowie (8) played both halves in two over par for a winning score of nett 65. Harvey Cowe (11) was runner-up with nett 66. Third place went to Walter Rutherford (11) with a nett 70. Doug Mackenzie (12), Willi Shearer (10) and Andrew Lannon (17) were next on nett 73.

Winners of the Coronation Ladies pairs were Moira McBeath and Angela Williamson. Mother and daughter pairing of Anne Simmonite and Laura Durrand were runners-up.

It was warm and windy for the seniors as they contested Round nine of the EGGS Summer Stableford. No fewer than nine of the 24 strong field scored 18 points for the front nine but, once again, those who managed the back nine best took the spoils. Only John Morrison managed to score well on both nines and he was a convincing winner with 37 points, including a fine inward nine of 19 points. Donald Gordon also covered the inward nine in 19 points for second place on countback from Donald Farquhar after both scored 34 points. Donald Jack was on his own on 33 points with Martin Beaumont and Alan Simmonite a further point back.
