Thurso duo take County Pairs in final week of summer season at Reay
The final week of the summer season at Reay was a busy one, with several competitions played and a number of prize-winners decided.
The ladies’ County Pairs saw some fantastic scoring, with a birdie at the fourth helping the Thurso duo of Alice Fidler and Trish Cowie take victory on nett 61.
A birdie at the fifth was the highlight of the round for the Wick pair of Hannah McLean and Maureen Johnson, who took second place on nett 64.
The Reay pair of Tricia Macdonald and Alison Ross were edged into third on countback after they also finished on nett 64.
The men’s Nuvia September Medal was played in breezy conditions and this was reflected in the scoring with no players breaking nett par.
Wayne Mowat birdied the fifth on his way to victory in division one with a solid round of 81 for nett 72. A trio of players, Owen Bain, Ian Ross and Andy Bain, were four shots behind after all finished on nett 76.
In division two a steady round of 84 for nett 71 gave Stuart Greig victory, ahead of Leslie Malcolm and Joe Wilson, who finished on tallies of nett 72.
The scores from the Nuvia monthly medals were used to determine the winner of the men’s Summer Eclectic, which saw Andrew Taylor take the silverware from eclectic specialist Lee Parnell on countback after both finished on impressive scores of 61.
Ian Ross and Michael Smith finished a stroke behind the winner after both recorded eclectic scores of 62.
The ladies’ Ball Sweep and Medal Winners’ Cup competition was also played in tough conditions, with Sarah Meiklejohn coming out on top after a fine round of 86 for nett 75. A trio of players, Alison Ross, Carol Paterson and Julie Minchin, finished three shots adrift after all posted rounds of nett 78.
The final round of the North Point Distillery Senior Stableford was won by Colin Struthers with an impressive 37 points, with a birdie at the fifth helping him to victory.
Pete McCartney and Jack Johnstone both birdied the 18th as they shared second place on 36 points, with John Brock taking fourth place on 35.
In the final standings, long-term leader Sandy Chisholm secured the Stableford trophy on an eight-round aggregate score of 295, ahead of Pete McCartney on 288 and Colin Struthers on 285.
The eclectic trophy was won by Alex Anderson on a brilliant tally of 57, ahead of Pete McCartney on 60 and Stuart Greig on 61.
The Ross Bogey saw players using their handicap allowance to play against the course in a matchplay form of scoring. A fine round of 81 saw Ronald Mathieson defeat the course on a score of two up.
A steady round from David R Craig gave him second place on a score of one down. Leslie Malcolm birdied the ninth to complete the podium places on two down.
The final autumn nine-hole competition of the season was won by Andy Bain on 18 Stableford points, with Pete McCartney taking second and Cammie Ross third.
The men’s summer matchplay competitions also reached their conclusion. Stuart Greig defeated Colin Paterson to win the singles trophy, while Ian Ross and Pete McCartney won the pairs competition, beating Mike and James Halliday in the final.
This weekend sees the winter season get under way with the women competing in their October Medal, while the men will be playing for the Parry Trophy.
