Action in the gents' section at Reay Golf Club during the past week has been firmly focused on the Summer Stableford with the tension starting to ramp up ahead of the final round on August 23.

Round 13 was played in windy conditions and this was reflected in the scoring, with a best-of-the-day total of 32 posted by Doug Mackenzie and Jack Johnstone.

Mackenzie played fairly steadily on the day, with a couple of poor holes costing him, while Johnstone recovered from a slow start to post his score. Ian Ross finished in third place on 30 points.

The conditions and scoring improved for round 14 with John O’Brien and Lee Malcolm sharing top spot on 36 points. O’Brien fired a birdie at the fifth on his way to a round of 75, while Malcolm was left to rue a non-counting hole at the 11th in an otherwise solid round.

A good front nine was the foundation for a score of 35 for Doug Mackenzie and third place, while Donald Mowat birdied the sixth during a topsy-turvy round of 32 points.

Round 15 saw the best score of the week recorded in the competition with Jimmy Meiklejohn firing a round of 41 points, which included birdies at the sixth and 10th holes, and he impressively played the inward half in one under par.

Jack Johnstone had a good finishing run of holes to finish on 36 points alongside Lee Parnell who, after a non-counting hole at the first, covered the rest of the course in three over par, with a birdie at the 10th providing the highlight.

In round 11 of the ladies' Summer Stableford Pam Bain topped the standings alongside the in-form Nicola Campbell after both amassed 37 points. Bain managed a birdie at the 13th which allowed her to take first place on countback.

Eleanor Tunn fired birdies at the 13th and 15th on her way to an impressive round of 72 for 36 points. Matching Tunn’s tally were Alison Ross, another player in good form, Eileen Manson – who managed a birdie at the second – and Pauline Craig, who had a brace of birdies at the fifth and seventh holes.

The scoring was also good in the latest Senior Stableford competition sponsored by North Point Distillery. Donald Mowat bagged a bottle of the distillery’s finest with his nearest-the-pin effort at the final hole, but it was Stuart Greig who topped the standings with an excellent 41 points, helped by birdies at the fourth and sixth holes.

Alex Anderson birdied the eighth on his way to 39 points and second place, with Jack Johnstone taking third on 37 and Murdo Macdonald fourth on 36.

This weekend will be a busy one at the club as it hosts the legendary Safari Open for teams of four on Saturday, followed by the Junior Open on Sunday, then the Mizuno Pairs Open on Monday. For details of entry for these events see the Reay Golf Club website, Facebook and Twitter pages.
