THE first winter competition of 2012, a Stableford, was held at Wick last Sunday as the stormy weather relented.

Although it was dry for a while in the morning, the heavens opened after a couple of hours and it rained heavily for the remainder of the daylight hours resulting in only 13 members entering the competition.

Leading the way with 35 points was Simon Place (9), a fine effort in the conditions. He played well to score 20 points on the way out which included nett birdies at the third, sixth and seventh holes.

He started back with another nett birdie at the 10th but could not maintain his momentum, scoring 15 points on the way in with a no-score at the 16th.

Second with 34 points was Ryan Sutherland (14) who also scored 20 points on the way out with nett birdies at the sixth and seventh.

He made a great start back with a nett birdie at the 10th but then struggled with a couple of no-scores, at the 14th and 17th holes, to score only 14 points despite another nett birdie at the 15th.

Veteran Harry Cormack (20) was third with 32 points. He did well to score 17 points on the way out as he had no-scores at the third and sixth holes, but made amends with nett birdies at the fifth, seventh and eighth holes and scored 15 points on the way in, finishing in style with a nett birdie at the 18th.

Other scores worthy of note came from Mike Steven (11) and Michael McAllan (10) with 31 points, and Pat Miller (14) and Farquhar MacGregor (14) with 30 points.

The next competition is the Winter Medal which is due to be played on Sunday.

The AGM was held in early December with Hamish McLean taking over as captain, Rob Sutherland as vice-captain, Ron Taylor continuing as secretary and Stewart Busby continuing as treasurer.

Robert Klimas, who has been a green keeper with the club for 25 years, is retiring in early March.

His replacement is James Taylor, son of the secretary, who has just completed his apprenticeship at Castle Stuart.
