Ross and Taylor are January Medal winners in tough conditions

Strong winds and squally winter showers made for tough conditions for players in the ladies' and gents' January Medal competitions at Reay at the weekend.

In the ladies' event it was Alison Ross who claimed the silverware, mastering the conditions to fire an excellent round of 92 for nett 69. Her halves of 44 and 48 were good enough to win by a margin of four shots.

Carol Paterson finished second on nett 73 after a round of 83 which included a pair of fine birdies at the 13th and 16th holes.

Sarah Meiklejohn posted two solid halves of 44 for a round of 88 and nett 74.

Pauline Craig took fourth place on nett 78, with a couple of poor holes costing her dearly in an otherwise solid round.

In the gents' competition, Andrew Taylor capped a fine performance with a birdie at the final hole to win on a score of nett 72 after a round of 83. Solid halves of 42 and 41 gave him a victory by a margin of two shots ahead of Cammie Ross on nett 74.

Ross posted a round of 80, made up of halves of 41 and 39.

Steve Efemey completed the podium places to finish in third place. After a slow start, Efemey reached the turn in 44 but an inward 40 helped him to a round of 84 for nett 75.

Bruce Mackay took fourth after a round of 90 for nett 77, with quick-fire birdies at the 15th and 16th providing the highlights of his round.

In the latest North Point Senior Stableford action, David R Craig posted an excellent round of 82 for 40 Stableford points to top the standings. Fred Groves birdied the fourth on his way to 36 points and second place after a round of 83.

Donald Mowat took third place on countback after scoring 34 points, with a birdie at the 15th helping him along the way. Stuart Greig finished fourth after he also carded 34 points which included a birdie at the sixth hole, with Graeme Harness taking fifth after he also finished on 34.

In the overall standings Carol Paterson remains in the lead on a six-round aggregate score of 217, ahead of Colin Struthers on 216. David R Craig has moved up to third place on 211, with Stuart Greig fourth on 209.

This Saturday will see the gents competing in round four of the winter eclectic competition, while the ladies will be playing in round four of their winter Stableford.
