Record turnout for Mackays’ Golf Challenge at Wick
A record 31 golfers took part in the annual Mackays’ Golf Challenge in Wick at the weekend.
This annual gathering of family and friends is now in its 20th year, with four generations involved in the competition at Wick Golf Club.
This year’s best Stableford score was by Doug Mackay with 42 points to win the John Mackay Cup, narrowly beating his son and last year’s winner Douglas Mackay Jnr on 40 points after a recount.
The best Stableford score over the five par threes was by Richard Macadie with 11 points, winning the Bill Mackay Trophy.
Ross Harper won the Kathleen Green Cup for juniors over 18 holes with 42 points, and Callum McInnes took the junior nine-hole trophy with 18 points.
Two new memorial trophies were added this year, Richard Macadie winning the Craig Banks Cup for closest to the pin on the second and the trio of Alec Green, Jonathan Mackay and Douglas Mackay Jnr taking the Ramsay Mackay Shield for best team score.
Longest drive on the seventh was by Billy McEwan.
More than 80 family and friends rounded off the evening with socialising and prize-giving at the Norseman Hotel.
Doug Mackay said: “It’s great that this fun competition is supported by family and friends with some traveling from as far as Switzerland and Berlin, as well as London, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, just for the weekend.”
