Reay winter eclectic sees Ross continue his purple patch

Saturday at Reay Golf Club saw some low scoring with calm conditions and a soft course providing good conditions for the players.

The gents were competing in round two of the winter eclectic and Cammie Ross continued his recent purple patch to post an excellent nett 65 following a round of 72. Birdies at the sixth, 14th and 18th holes helped him to his winning score.

Michael Grant, who has made a welcome return to Reay as a winter member, fired the best gross score of the day, a fine round of 70, for nett 67 and second place on countback. His halves of 36 and 34 included birdies at the 10th and 16th holes.

Leslie Malcolm combined halves of 38 and 45 for a round of 83 for nett 67 and third place.

Steve Efemey was next best after halves of 39 and 38 gave him a score of 77 for nett 68, while Lee Parnell posted a round of 73 for nett 68, with a brace of birdies at the eighth and 18th helping him to fifth place.

Simon Harper is also a man in form, and he finished with a birdie at the final hole to post a nett 69 following a round of 77 for sixth spot.

In the overall standings, eclectic specialist Parnell leads the way on 64, ahead of Ross on 66, Stuart Greig on 67 and Harper on 68.

The following day a strong wind made scoring tough in round seven of the winter league Stableford but the conditions didn’t faze Bruce Mackay who birdied the 12th on his way to an impressive tally of 40 points.

Donald Mowat fired a round of 82 for 37 points and second place, while Graeme Fryett took third with a solid 35 points. Ian Ross and John O’Brien, who birdied the sixth hole, were next best on 34 points.

In the overall standings Kenny Farmer Snr leads the way with a five-round aggregate score of 164, ahead of David R Craig on 163.

The ladies were competing in the November ball sweep competition and it was Jacqui Greig who took the win after a fine round of 96 gave her nett 73 and victory by a margin of three shots. Pam Bain was second after a round of 85 gave her a nett 76, with Carol Paterson third on nett 77.

A trio of players – Nicola Campbell, Alison Ross and Carole Cameron – were next best on nett 78.

In the North Point Distillery Senior Stableford competition it was a day of double celebration for Carol Paterson after she topped the leaderboard and won the nearest-the-pin prize for her fine tee shot at the final hole. Her winning tally of 38 points included a birdie at second hole.

Stuart Greig fired halves of 38 and 41 for a round of 79 which was good enough for 36 points and second place. Three players – Colin Struthers, Donald Mowat and Malcolm Clasper – finished on 35 points to share third place.

In the overall standings Jack Johnstone leads the way on a six-round aggregate score of 184, ahead of Malcolm Thomson on 178 and Sandy Chisholm on 171.

The ladies and gents are in winter league Stableford action on Saturday.
