Reay Golf Club: Steven shines with Pilkington Cup success

Saturday saw the gents competing for the Pilkington Cup at Reay in bright conditions, and it was Willie Steven who shone most on the course to win after an excellent round of 79 for nett 66.

His halves of 41 and an impressive inward 38, which included a birdie at the 10th, were good enough to seal victory by a single shot from Willie Paton. Paton also had a good inward half of 40 during a round of 87 which gave him a nett 67.

Scratch player Gregor Munro took third place after an excellent score of 67 which included four birdies, at the sixth, 13th, 14th and 18th holes.

Ian Farquhar took fourth place on nett 68 after a round of 81 made up of contrasting halves of 44 and 37, while Doug Mackenzie had to settle for fifth place on countback after he also fired a nett 68 following a fine round of 76 which included birdies at the third and 17th holes.

There was also some fine golf played in the Royal Hotel Mixed Foursomes, with Carol Paterson and Steve Efemey coming out on top after an impressive round of 81 for nett 69.

A birdie at the 13th helped Pam and Andy Bain to second place on countback after a round of 81 for nett 72.

Pauline and David R Craig were left to rue a couple of bad holes in an otherwise solid round which left them in third place after a score of 92 was good enough for nett 72.

Jacqui Greig and Willie Paton combined nicely to take fourth place after a round of 94 for nett 73.

In round nine of the Abbott Risk Consulting Summer Cup, Lee Malcolm fired birdies at the 10th and 14th holes on his way to 39 points and first place. Lee Parnell was another man on the birdie trail, with a brace coming at the first and 13th, on his way to a fine tally of 38 points.

Rodney Grant produced a strong back nine to take third and head a trio of players on 36 points, with Cammie Ross edged into fourth place despite birdies at the fifth and ninth. Michael Grant also had a pair of birdies, at the sixth and 14th, as he took fifth place.

In the overall standings Leslie Malcolm leads the way on a six-round aggregate score of 212, ahead of Andy Bain on 211 and Jimmy Meiklejohn on 207.

There were also birdies galore in the latest North Point Distillery Senior Stableford action, with a brace at the third and fifth holes helping Pete McCartney take the win on 38 points.

Kenny Farmer Snr produced two solid halves of 43 for a round of 86, which was good enough for 37 points and second place, with Colin Struthers third on 36. Pete Barker birdied the fifth to finish on 36 points, taking fourth place on countback, with John Brock edged into fifth place after a birdie at the sixth also helped him to a tally of 36 points.

In the overall standings John Brock leads the way on an eight round aggregate score of 305, ahead of Malcolm Thomson and Sandy Chisholm who are both on 301.

This Sunday sees the club host its annual mixed open, while on Saturday the gents will be competing for the Donald Campbell Trophy.
