Reay Golf Club: Steven gets the nod after countback in medal event

Some glorious early November weather saw the golfers of Reay flocking to the course to play in the latest round of winter competitions.

In the gents' November Medal, countback was required to determine the victor when Willie Steven and Colin Munro were tied at the top of the leaderboard after both fired fine rounds of nett 66.

In the final analysis it was Steven who got the nod courtesy of an excellent round of 78, made up of halves of 40 and 38 and which included a birdie at the long fourth hole.

A round of 74 from Munro, made up of halves of 35 and 39 and which included a brace of birdies at the fifth and 13th, saw him take the runner-up spot.

Lee Parnell finished third on nett 68 but had the distinction of posting the lowest gross score of the day, an excellent round of 72 made up of halves of 35 and 37 which included a birdie at the 17th.

Ian Farquhar took fourth on nett 69 after a round of 84, with Stuart Greig next best on nett 71 after a round of 83.

The ladies' November Medal was won by Carol Paterson with a solid round of 81 for nett 70, with halves of 41 and 40 helping her to a three-shot victory.

A good start to her round set up Heather Campbell for a fine score of nett 73 which gave her second place, one shot ahead of Jacqui Greig who finished third on nett 74.

In the latest North Point Senior Stableford action, Fred Groves found his groove to top the standings with an excellent tally of 42 points after a round of 76 which included a birdie at the 15th hole.

A fine round of 82 gave Pete McCartney second place on 40 points, with Malcolm Thomson and Hugh Millar next best after both played well to score 39 points.

In the latest Winter League Stableford action Jack Johnstone managed to accumulate a fine tally of 38 points, ahead of Sandy Chisholm on 37, Stuart Greig on 36 and Jimmy Meiklejohn who birdied the 13th on 35 points.

This weekend will see players competing in the Winter Eclectic and Winter League Stableford competitions.

Tain's Billy Ferries won the scratch section in the latest North Golf Winter Alliance event, held at Dornoch on Sunday, while Rachel Durrand of Thurso came out on top in the ladies' competition.

Results – Scratch: 1 Billy Ferries (Tain), 72 (BIH); 2 Allan Cameron (RDGC), 72; 3 Gordon Steven (Wick), 76 (BIH).

Category one: 1 Munro Ferries (Tain), 72, nett 71; 2 Frank Mackie (Tain), 75, nett 72; 3 Bryan Suttar (Thurso), 77, nett 73 (BIH).

Category two: 1 Roy Page (Lybster), 91, nett 75; 2 Mark Mackay (Wick), 91, nett 76; 3 Ken Lorimer (Brora), 95, nett 77 (BIH).

Ladies: 1 Rachel Durrand (Thurso), 105, nett 75; 2 Angela Grant (Brora), 96, nett 76; 3 Sarah Meiklejohn (Reay), 94, nett 75.

Nearest the pin: Robert Ross (Tain).

The next Alliance event is at Golspie on November 19.
