Reay Golf Club: Mackay recovers to post impressive winning score
Saturday saw the gents at Reay competing for the Nuvia July Medal, with silverware up for grabs for both division one and division two players.
Best nett score of the day was posted in division two by Bruce Mackay during a remarkable round of 83 for nett 65. After taking 10 shots at the long fourth hole, Mackay could have been forgiven for thinking it was not going to be his day – but a hat-trick of birdies at the seventh, 13th and 15th holes helped him to his impressive winning score.
A solid round of 91 for nett 72 saw Alistair Gunn finish runner-up, with Stuart Greig a further two shots back after a round of 87 for nett 74.
In division one, halves of 38 and 41 gave Andrew Taylor a winning score of 79 for nett 68, with a birdie at the sixth helping him secure the medal.
Lee Parnell fired the lowest gross score of the day, a fine round of 73 which included a red-hot streak of birdies at the fifth, sixth and seventh holes, to finish in second place on nett 69.

Impressive halves of 37 and 38 helped Michael Grant to third place after a round of 75 for nett 71.
In the latest North Point Distillery Senior Stableford action, a birdie at the fifth helped David Gisbey to a fine winning score of 37 points. Sandy Chisholm edged out Pete McCartney to take second place on countback after both finished on 36 points.
Arran Johnson was in fine form in the latest round of the Abbott Risk Consulting Summer Cup, firing birdies at the sixth, 12th and 14th on his way to a winning score of 38 Stableford points.
Solid halves of 41 helped Ian Farquhar to a round of 82 for 37 points and second place on the day. A birdie at the 14th helped Willie Steven to 36 points, a tally matched by Tom Ross who was helped by a flurry of birdies at the third, sixth, 11th and 12th holes.
In the women’s section, Heather Campbell maintained her fine form to win round three of the Summer Stableford competition on an impressive tally of 42 points. Alison Ross finished second on 36, with Jacqui Greig completing the podium places on 34.
Alison Ross and Pam Bain represented the club with distinction at the Durness Women’s Open at the weekend, with Alison winning the overall handicap competition while Pam bagged the scratch trophy.
This weekend will see the finals of the club championship contested, while on Sunday the club will host its Mixed Open.
