It has been a very busy week at Reay with players competing in several competitions on the links.

The Nuvia May Medal was played in calm conditions and several players took advantage to post some low scores.

Finishing top of the standings was Aly Mackay after an excellent round of 68 for nett 64. Mackay was helped by no fewer than four birdies, at the third, sixth, 13th and 16th holes.

Michael Smith took second place on countback after a fine round of 68 for nett 67, with a brace of birdies at the 12th and 18th holes providing the highlights.

Graham Fryett continued his steady progress to take third on nett 67, while Gregor Munro produced the lowest gross score of the day in the shape of a fine 67 which included 16 pars and birdies at the sixth and 16th holes.

In the latest North Point Distillery Senior Stableford action, Malcolm Thomson posted a fantastic score of 43 points, with birdies at the sixth and 12th contributing to his winning tally.

Fred Groves, after a round of 80, and Alex Anderson, after a round of 78, were next best on 40 points. Jack Johnstone and Colin Struthers finished a point further back after both finished on 39.

Round three of the Abbott Risk Consulting Summer Stableford was also a day of good scoring, with Jack Johnstone finishing at the top of the leaderboard on 40 points despite having two non-scoring holes.

Jason Norwood maintained his excellent form to take second place on 39 points, with birdies at the fifth, sixth and 11th holes thrown in for good measure.

Leslie Malcolm posted a solid 37 points for third place, while youngster Dylan Mackenzie continued his good progress to finish on 36 – a score matched by Steve Efemey who birdied the eighth and 18th holes during his round.

The Beinn Ratha Trophy was won by the in-form Simon Harper after an excellent round of 73 for nett 65, with birdies at the 10th and 13th proving crucial. Owen Bain followed up his Dunnett Cup win with a round of 83 for nett 67 and second place, with a birdie at the tough seventh hole.

Sandy Chisholm, Stuart Greig and Donald Mowat all finished on nett 70.

Reay had a team of ladies playing in the Americas Cup, a triangular competition with teams from Wick and Thurso.

Wick hosted the competition on the Reiss links and it was Reay who took the trophy on a fine tally of 15 points, ahead of Wick and Thurso. This is the third year in a row Reay have won the event.

Eleanor Tunn was representing the club in the Scottish Golf North County Championships at Maverston, with Thurso’s Laura Durrand also competing. Both Eleanor and Laura qualified for the knockout stages and Eleanor made it all the way to the final where she lost 3 and 2 to Ellie Docherty of Moray Golf Club.

On club business it was a productive week for Carol Paterson, who won the Sandside Shield after halves of 40 and 41 gave her a winning score of 81 for nett 70. Alison Ross had to settle for second place on countback after she also finished on nett 70, with Sarah Meiklejohn and Carole Cameron next best on nett 71.

Paterson also finished top in round three of the Summer Stableford competition with a fine tally of 35 points. Four players – Pam Bain, Jacqui Greig, Joy Fraser and Carole Cameron – were next best after all finished on 34 points.

This weekend sees Reay co-hosting the keenly anticipated NC500 Links 36-hole Open with Wick Golf Club. Round one will be played at Wick with sponsorship from Hugh Simpson (Contractors), while Reay will host round two with sponsorship from CS Drilling Services.
