The duo will take part in two days of training and team building before competing against swimmers from Cyprus, Great Britain, Lebanon, Portugal, Switzerland, Venezuela and USA.

17-year-old Tom said: "It was a real honour to be selected for the team to go to Porto International. I have always aspired to compete in Europe, and to have the chance to swim alongside some of the best athletes in the North of Scotland.

“It will be an amazing experience for me and will bring me huge confidence ahead of future competitions.

“I’m very thankful for the huge support and dedication from my coaches at Thurso swim team who have helped me achieve this goal, the biggest I have reached in my swimming career.”

Tom will take part in four individual swims, competing in his strongest events — the 50m, 100m & 200m backstroke and the 200m free.

He has also been selected for four relay events.

A representative from Thurso Amateur Swimming Club said: “Tom is looking forward to his first taste of international competition abroad and hopes to improve his personal bests ahead of the Scottish Open later this month & the Scottish Summer Meet in July.

“Everyone at TASC and across the Highland Swim Team area look forward to following Tom and Alison’s progress and hope they enjoy their experience.”
