THE winter competitions drew to a close with the eighth round of the Winter Stableford played at Wick last
Sunday.
Although there was a westerly breeze and early starters had to contend with a frost, scoring was good with 13 of the 31 competitors scoring 35 points or better. Martin Sutherland (12) won one of the first competitions of the winter but has been in the doldrums since then, however, he regained his form to win the competition with a score of 39 points which equates to a nett 66, a superb effort in the conditions.
Sutherland played sparkling golf on the front nine, going out in 38 to score 21 points, and came back in 40 to score 18 points. Next on 38 points were Clair Falconer (17), Roy MacKenzie (13) and Robert Cormack (20) with MacKenzie claiming second place by virtue of a better last six holes.
MacKenzie reached the turn in 43 to score 17 points, which included a no score at the third hole, and played well below his handicap to come back in 37 to take 21 points.
Third was Falconer who went out in 45 for 17 points and then turned on the style to come back in 39 to score 21 points, which included a birdie at the
14th.
Cormack went out in 41 to score an amazing 22 points, the best of the day, but struggled to come back in 47 to score 16 points which included a no score at the 16th.
Ian Coghill (7) claimed fifth spot with 37 points. For Coghill it was a tale of two halves as he could only muster 15 points on the way out but played brilliant golf to come back in level-par 34 which included three birdies at the 13th, 16th and 17th holes to score 22 points.
Next on 36 points were Gordon Steven (19), Peter Taylor (11) and Gary Davidson (11) followed by Dave Mowat (20), Ryan Sutherland (14), Greg Shearer (9), Rob Sutherland (13) and Ian Thomson (5) all with 35 points.
Winner of the overall competition was vice-captain Rob Sutherland with a best four round total of 153 points.
He beat Mike Morrice by six points with Sanders Harper and David Walker next on 146. This was a terrific effort by Sutherland who was also the overall winner in last winter’s competition.
The new season gets under way tomorrow with the annual captain versus vice-captain’s match with a draw for partners being held in the clubhouse at 12.30pm. This is followed on Sunday by the Cancer Relief Medal.
