Striker Liam Bremner could be set to agree a deal to play for Wick Academy in the next Highland League campaign.

The North Caledonian League's player of the year will join the Scorries for pre-season training after being top scorer in the North Caledonian League in 2021/22 while playing for Golspie Sutherland.

The 30-year-old found the net 33 times in 21 games, a remarkable tally considering he was injured for the last five matches of the season.

The scaffolder from Staxigoe, who left the army three years ago, says he is now at a stage of his career where he wants to prove himself at a higher level.

"I have been at Golspie for the last three seasons and I have been top goalscorer at the club," he said.

"With Wick Academy, it is a chance to play in a higher league and I think the time is right for me to make the step up.

"I want the chance to play in the Highland League and see how good I can be there and can be a recognised starter for them."

Bremner played as a trialist for Academy in December in a 2-0 win against Lossiemouth when he came off the bench in the second half.

Wick manager Gary Manson said: "Liam is going to join up with the squad for pre-season and see how things go. He is someone we've been aware of for some time now and he trained with us at times throughout last season.

"He's had two or three fantastic years in the North Caley so I'm delighted he is keen to test himself at the next level."

Bremner was named the North Caledonian League player of the season as well as receiving the top scorer award. He felt that being injured for the final five matches of the season would have ruled him out of the player of the year accolade, but he was delighted to receive it.

"I wasn't expecting to get so many goals, but a lot of them happened during the first half of the season," he said. "In the first half of the season, I think I scored 20 goals and I slowed down in the second half.

"But I wouldn't have scored as many goals as I did if it wasn't for the boys I was playing with, so a lot of credit has to go to them.

"I missed the last five games of the season, but I can't complain with how many goals I got.

"I wasn't expecting to be named player of the season, so to receive that along with the top goalscorer award was an extra bonus."

Bremner is also playing for Wick Groats in the Caithness AFA summer league.
