Saturday saw a return to action on the Reay links with players competing for some fantastic prizes in the Ronnie Campbell Open.

Ronnie, who was a keen member at both Reay and Thurso golf clubs, lost his fight against cancer in 2019, with his family and friends coming together to help organise the event in his memory and to raise funds for a number of local cancer charities.

The on-course action saw some great scoring with players keen to get their competitive juices flowing after a few weeks' lay-off due to the poor weather, and bright skies and a light wind made for perfect January conditions.

The first prize was won by Brent Munro after a tremendous round of 68 gave him a nett 65. Impressive halves of 33 and 35 included a hat-trick of birdies at the first, third and 18th holes.

Pam Bain posted an excellent round of 78 for nett 66 and second place after halves of 40 and an inward 38.

Leslie Malcolm took third on countback after a birdie at the 12th helped him to a round of 84 for nett 67.

Lybster’s Malcolm Thomson took fourth after his round of 78 was also good enough for nett 67.

Joe Wilson bagged three birdies, at the fourth, fifth and 18th, on his way to a round of 80 for nett 67 and fifth place.

Nearest-the-pin prizes were won by Andrew Taylor and Dougie Thorburn, with Thorburn also posting a score of 68 to match Munro with the lowest scratch round of the day.

David R Craig and Carol Paterson both fired excellent scores of 40 points to top the standings in the latest action in the North Point Distillery Senior Stableford competition, with Craig taking the win on the day on countback.

Sandy Chisholm bagged a birdie at the sixth on his way to 37 points and third place, while Colin Struthers played steadily to take fourth place on 35 points.

In the overall standings Carol Paterson’s recent excellent form has seen her leap to the top on a six-round aggregate score of 217. Struthers lies a point behind on 216, with Alex Anderson and Malcolm Clasper the best of the chasing pack on 206.

In the latest round of the Winter League Stableford, four hardy souls braved windy conditions with David R Craig taking the win on 28 points ahead of Graeme Fryett and Willie Paton on 27.

This Saturday the gents will be back on the course competing in the January Medal, with further Winter League Stableford action scheduled for Sunday.
