The ladies' winter golf season is now under way at Reay, with players competing for the October Medal on a day of blustery wind and showers.

Sarah Meiklejohn enjoyed a fair bit of success during the summer and she continued her form to fire a round of 85 for nett 71 and the win. Her halves of 40 and 45 included a birdie at the fifth hole, and were it not for a blip around the turn her margin of victory could have been even greater.

As it was she won by a single shot ahead of Jacqui Greig, who fired halves of 45 and 49 for a round of 94, giving her a nett 72.

Tricia McDonald birdied the 11th on her way to a solid round of 88 for nett 73 and third place.

Rebecca Munro finished fourth on nett 74 after a round of 87 which included a birdie at the 13th. Pam Bain birdied the fifth on her way to a round of 84, the best gross score of the day, which gave her a nett 75 and fifth place.

The gents were competing in round one of the winter eclectic and the in-form Stuart Greig showed the rest of the field a clean pair of heels to win after an excellent round of 77 for nett 65.

Evan Sutherland combined matching halves of 40 for a round of 80, giving him nett 70 and second place.

Martin Bain matched Sutherland’s 70 to finish in third place on countback after he posted a round of 84 which included a birdie at the 17th.

It was a tale of two halves for Colin Munro, who roared home in 37 after an indifferent front nine of 42. His 79 was good enough for a nett 71 and fourth place.

Murdo Macdonald was edged into fifth on countback after he also posted a nett 71 courtesy of a solid round of 88.

The key to eclectic success is firing as many birdies as you can over the six rounds, and Andy Bain got his campaign off to a good start with a hat-trick of birdies at the fifth, seventh and eighth.

Eclectic specialists Lee Parnell and Alex Anderson both birdied the 13th, along with Lee Malcolm, to give themselves something to build on for the later rounds.

Meanwhile, in the latest North Point Distillery Senior Stableford competition it was Stuart Greig who once again topped the standings after birdies at the third and 14th helped him to a winning score of 36 points.

Sandy Chisholm birdied the 16th to finish second on 34, while Alex Anderson took third after a birdie at the 17th helped him to 33 points. A trio of players – Kenny Farmer Snr, David A Craig and Jack Johnstone – were next best on 30 points.

This Saturday will see the gents competing in the Banks Medal.
