Mackay gets the nod as countback is required in Reay Senior Stableford

Golfers at Reay were treated to some fine February weather during the past week's competitions, with some excellent scores posted in perfect conditions.

In the latest North Point Distillery Senior Stableford action, countback was required to determine the winner on the day after both David Mackay and Carol Paterson posted fantastic tallies of 40 points.

After the numbers had been crunched it was Mackay who got the nod thanks to an excellent round of 78 made up of halves of 41 and 37. Paterson birdied the second hole on her way to a fine round of 79.

Fred Groves took third place on 37 points after a round of 81, with Alex Anderson and Malcolm Thomson next best on 36. Thomson also went home with a bottle of spiced rum from the sponsors after he picked up the nearest-the-pin prize.

In the overall standings Carol Paterson’s recent fine form has seen her move to the top on a six-round aggregate score of 225, ahead of another in-form player, David R Craig, on 218, and Colin Struthers on 216.

In round four of the gents' Winter Eclectic, Andrew Taylor produced a spectacular round of 72 for nett 61 to blow the rest of the field away. His round was Nick Faldo-esque in terms of consistency, with matching halves of 36 and only three bogeys posted on an otherwise unblemished card.

Owen Bain, one of the latest crop of promising youngsters coming through the junior ranks, took second place after an impressive round of 84 for nett 64, and there is sure to be more to come from him over the next few weeks.

Gavin Gunn had to settle for third place after a round of 74 for nett 65 which would be good enough to win on most weekends. His round was made up of halves of 37, with 13 pars and five bogeys getting him to his score.

Dave Snashall fired birdies at the fourth, seventh, 10th and 14th on his way to a round of 74 for nett 67 and fourth place.

In the overall standings Stuart Greig maintains his lead with an eclectic score of 60, ahead of Leslie Malcolm on 63 and Cammie Ross and Lee Parnell who are both on 64.

In round five of the ladies' winter league Stableford it was Pam Bain who finished on the top of the leaderboard with an impressive score of 37 points. Carol Paterson and Jacqui Greig had 34 points, with Sarah Meiklejohn and Alison Ross next best after both posted rounds of 33 points.

This Saturday will see the gents back in action in round five of the winter eclectic, while the ladies will be competing in the winter league Stableford on the same day.

The club is hosting its AGM in the clubhouse on Wednesday March 1. All members and prospective members are welcome to attend.
