SATURDAY dawned bright and breezy for the second round of the Freswick Cup at Thurso Golf Club.

The course was playing its full length after heavy rain through the week and scoring was more difficult than of late.

Edgar Wyllie got off to a good start and reached the turn in three over par.

A lost ball at his penultimate hole proved costly and his nett 69 gave him third place on the day.

Harvey Cowe had an up-and-down first nine holes which included two eights and two birdies.

A further birdie on the back nine enabled him to come home in one over par for the best gross score of 77, converting to nett 65 after handicap subtraction.

Ali Simpson took second spot with nett 66. Pat Valentine was the best of the rest with nett 70.

Overall winner of the Freswick Cup was Cowe who had a combined total of 137, two shots better than Simpson.

Valentine was third on 139, two strokes ahead of Wyllie. First-round leader Bob Black with a 65 was next best on 142.

On Sunday the Tom Adams Quaich was played for in fine weather.

Ian Macphee eased into his round with bogeys at his first two holes and then played his next 13 holes in one under par.

A comparatively poor triple bogey finish resulted in the lowest gross score of the day of 74, and a winning score of nett 61.

Steve Grogan took second place with nett 66. Three players – Steven Osborne, Gavin Souter and Keith Dreaves – returned scores of nett 69 and finished in the same order.

Peter Knight was the runaway winner of the penultimate round of the EGGS Summer Eclectic on Tuesday.

Knight made light of heavy conditions to score 40 points with 22 of them coming from a two-over-par front nine.

John Morrison was a distant second with 33 points, one better than Dave Lyall and Pat Valentine, the only other players to beat the 30-point mark.

Valentine’s birdie two at the ninth took him to a share of fourth place in the eclectic on nett 59 but Jim Telfer remains in the lead on nett 56, one ahead of Malcolm Clasper and Ronald Mackay.
