A round of 74 was enough to give Nicky Klimas the title.

Nicky Klimas of Wick took the scratch prize with a five over par 74.

Klimas went out in one over par 36, having eight pars and just one bogey at the fifth hole. Unfortunately, he started back with a double bogey at the 10th followed by another double bogey at the 17th but made amends with birdies at the 16th and 18th to come back in 38.

Overall handicap winner was 24-handicapper Richard Wilson of Wick, with his nett 66 a phenomenal score in the conditions. Wilson went out in 48, including a triple bogey at the eighth. He then played great golf downwind to come back in 42, with the highlight being a birdie at the 14th, where he won a bottle of Old Pulteney for nearest the pin.

Greg Shearer (8) of Wick was first in handicap category 1 (0 to 12) with a nett 68, beating Grant Maxwell (8) of Reay on a better inward half. Shearer did well to reach the turn in 40 and played superb golf to come back in two over par 36.

Maxwell went out in 39, which included a birdie at the ninth, and back in 37.

Next with a nett 73 was R. Matheson (7) of Thurso and Drew Robertson (10) of Wick. Matheson claimed third place on a better inward half.

The handicap category 2 (13 to 28) was won by Sanders Harper (18) of Wick, with his nett 67 beating J. Johnstone (18) of Thurso on a better inward half.

Harper went out in 44 despite having double bogeys at the fifth and eighth and played well to come back in 41. Johnstone made the best of starts with a birdie at the first but had double bogeys at the sixth and eighth to go out in 43 and played steady golf to come back in 42.

Third was Gibby Banks (15) of Wick, with a nett 69. Banks went out in 43 and back in 41, finishing in style with a birdie at the 18th.

There was a poor entry for the third round of the summer league, with Nicky Klimas (2) returning both the best scratch score, a one under par 68, and the best handicap score of 66.

Klimas had nine straight pars to go out in 35 followed by another eight pars and a birdie at the 11th to come back in one under par 33.

Young Gary Davidson (10) was second with a nett 71.

The next competition is a Stableford tomorrow (Saturday) followed by the July Medal on Wednesday.
