Impressive round by Ross in Reay Winter League Stableford

The improved weather saw players flock to the fairways at Reay with several competitions played during the past week.

The rescheduled January Eclectic was won by David R Craig after an excellent round of 85, made up of halves of 44 and 41, gave him a nett 66.

Donald Mowat put together steady halves of 42 and 41 for a round of 83 for nett 69 and second place.

Willie Steven and Andy Bain were next best after both carded rounds of nett 71, with Bain posting birdies at the fourth and eighth to help boost his eclectic score.

In the latest Winter League Stableford action, Cammie Ross birdied the 13th and 14th on his way to an impressive round of 74 for 41 Stableford points.

Willie Paton took second place on 38 after a fine round of 83, while a birdie at the 17th helped Simon Harper to 35 points and third place.

Jimmy Meiklejohn was also on the birdie trail, at the ninth and 16th, as he finished in a share of fourth place on 34 points with Kenny Farmer Snr and Kenny Farmer Jnr.

Countback was required to determine the winner in round three of the ladies' Winter League Stableford after Heather Campbell and Sarah Meiklejohn both finished on 33 points. In the final analysis it was Campbell who took the victory.

Pam Bain finished third on 31 points, ahead of Jane Mackenzie on 30 and Lora Jane Kelly on 29.

The latest round of the North Point Senior Stableford competition was a high-scoring affair, with birdies at the sixth and 15th helping Malcolm Thomson to victory on a tremendous tally of 40 points.

John Brock fired seven straight pars on the back nine to take second place on 39, ahead of Ian Ross on 36. Malcolm Clasper and Kenny Farmer Snr were next best on 34 points, with a birdie at the 14th helping Farmer Snr to his tally.

This Saturday will see the gents competing in the rescheduled February Eclectic, while the ladies will be playing in round four of their Winter Stableford. On Sunday, Reay hosts the North Golf Winter Alliance.

Tain's Munro Ferries had the best scratch of the day in Sunday’s North Golf Winter Alliance fixture at Portmahomack.

Malcolm Thomson (Lybster) was the category one winner, while Jimmy Nimmons (Portmahomack) took the honours in category two.

Reay’s Sarah Meiklejohn came out on top in the ladies’ section.

Results – Scratch: 1 Munro Ferries (Tain), 69; 2 Allan Cameron (Royal Dornoch), 71.

Category one: 1 Malcolm Thomson (Lybster), 75, nett 65; 2 David Mackay (Portmahomack), 78, nett 67.

Category two: 1 Jimmy Nimmons (Portmahomack), 78, nett 65; 2 Ken Lorimer (Brora), 85, nett 67.

Ladies: 1 Sarah Meiklejohn (Reay), 83, nett 69; 2 Jean Clasper (Thurso), 96, nett 75 (BIH).

Nearest the pin: Gordon Vass (Portmahomack).

Alliance fixtures are held throughout the winter season at courses across the north Highlands. Venues are Invergordon, Portmahomack, Tain, Royal Dornoch, Golspie, Brora, Wick, Thurso, Reay and Durness.
