Halkirk United and St Duthus will try again this weekend after their North Caledonian Cup first-round tie at Morrison Park was postponed because of the freezing weather.

Four cup matches are scheduled for Saturday, along with two North Caledonian League fixtures including Thurso’s trip to Orkney.

The Anglers are keen to embark on a run in the second of the two North Caley knockout tournaments after going out at the first time of asking in the Football Times Cup earlier this season against Alness United.

Halkirk United and St Duthus have met three times in the current campaign, with the Anglers having had the upper hand each time. They progressed 7-6 on penalties after a goalless draw at home in the first round of the North of Scotland Cup in August, while in the league they won 1-0 at Morrison Park in August and 2-0 at Grant Park in December.

Halkirk United are six points clear at the top of the league, but coach Liam Sutherland said last week: “The North Caledonian Cup is as much of a priority as any other competition we’re involved in.”

Thurso will be looking to move further away from the bottom two teams in the division by taking something from their game against Orkney at Kirkwall Grammar School. The islanders won 2-0 when the sides met at the Dammies in September.

Alness United and Inverness Athletic drew 2-2 in a rearranged league match at Dalmore Park on Wednesday night.
