Thurso ladies' golf season got off to a cold but dry start, with the course looking great thanks to greenkeeper Frazer Sparling and his team. There has been a good turnout of more than 20 every week.

The ladies had two weeks of friendly eight-hole pairs competitions to get warmed up, with lots of new and older faces participating.

The real competitions began with the 3 Club Goblet which was well contested, with six ladies all finishing on the same score of nett 55 – something that is unheard of.

Finishing sixth, while almost securing a hole in one on the third with her 4 hybrid making it an easy tap-in two, was Rachel Durrand. Fifth place went to Moira McBeath with a steady run of fives on her card.

Fourth, with the lowest gross of the day, was Laura Durrand, while Trish Cowie produced steady golf to take third.

The top two ladies decided not to choose a putter. Runner-up was Aileen Simmonite, selecting her driver, 5 iron and 9 iron, and the winner of the 3 Club Goblet was Fiona McLeod with her 3 wood, 7 iron and 9 iron.

The Saturday saw the ladies play a Stableford competition for the Gunnach Trophy.

Anne Simmonite was delighted with her round and finished with two pars, securing her 39 points. That was only good enough for fourth, with third place going to Moira McBeath (40 points) who had a cracking two on the third.

Runner-up with 43 points was Rachel Durrand, managing to score on every hole. Winner with a remarkable 47 points, with two non-scoring holes, was Hilary Geddes as she started her season with a handicap reduction.

Tuesday saw the first of the strokeplay events, the April Medal, which was played in hailstones. Third with a nett 74 was Morag Mackay. Runner-up, losing out on countback, was Jean Sutherland with 72 and the winner was Laura Durrand with a steady gross 75, nett 72, to secure the medal.
