Thurso's Morrison finds solace in Freswick Cup.

ON Saturday at Thurso Golf Club the second round of the Freswick Cup was played.

It also doubled up as the Blargoans August Monthly Medal which had previously been cancelled.

The better inward half was required to determine first and second places with Dougie Thorburn coming out on top after recording the lowest gross score of the day and a nett 69.

Thorburn reached the turn in level par after a birdie at the second hole was cancelled out by a bogey at the ninth.

A bogey at the 10th was followed by an eagle at the 13th for an inward half of one under par.

Malcolm Morrison took second spot in a steady round with the highlight being a birdie at the opening hole.

Neil Jackson was third on nett 70 with Keith Dreaves a shot further back.

Four players – Terry Mackay, David Dunbar, Ali Simpson and Lenny Murray – scored nett 72.

There was some consolation for Morrison as he was the clear winner of the Freswick Cup, having the best nett score in both rounds with a total of 140. In second place was Mackay after two steady rounds of 72. Dreaves took third spot with a total of 146.

The Tom Adams Quaich was played on Sunday. Jimmy Meiklejohn had far and away the best gross and nett scores on the day.

Out in level par, despite a seven at the seventh, he kept his nerve to cover the inward nine holes in three over par for a nett 65.

A distant second was Mick Ross with nett 71 followed by Pat Valentine on 72.

Dreaves, Walter Rutherford and Bob Robertson were next best with nett 75.

The previous Tuesday the seniors found it tough going for the

penultimate round of the EGGS Summer Eclectic.

Jim Hawthorn showed what could be done with a very good outward nine that yielded 19 Stableford points but a couple of blanks early in the back nine disturbed his momentum and he had to settle for a final tally of 32 points.

After an outward nine of 14 points Bob Black was going well on the back nine until he failed to score on the last leaving his total at 31 points – earning him second place behind Hawthorn.

Gary Henderson finished in third place with 30 points, one clear of Robertson, Jim Telfer and Valentine.

There was no movement in the top places after Tuesday’s round so Donald Jack leads on nett 57.5.

Sandy Stewart is second on nett 58.5 and Telfer third on nett 59.5.

Bill Hossack had been showing good form on his way to the final of the EGGS matchplay shield but he met his match in the final as Robertson won the shield by a three and two margin.
