LAST Friday night saw the climax of the ladies’ and gents’ club championships at Reay with five finals played.

A strong breeze from the east and fiery greens made conditions difficult.

Claiming victory in the gents’ scratch final was youngster Ross Munro with a hard-earned 3&1 win over Lee Parnell. With the tie all square at the turn, Munro claimed the 10th hole to go one up. Over the next four holes Parnell had a number of half-chances to the level the scores, but his failure to convert these was punished by a birdie two from Munro at the 15th which put him two up.

After halving the 16th, Munro finished the job in style with a fine birdie three at the 17th.

The ladies’ scratch final was also decided on the 17th green with Tricia Macdonald defeating the in-form Carole Cameron by 2&1. The closely-fought match seesawed back and forth, with neither player managing to lead by more than one until the decisive blow was struck on the penultimate green.

In the ladies’ handicap final, Su Hawes took the scalp of captain Morag Mackay with an excellent 5&4 victory.

The gents’ handicap final was the only tie to be decided on the last green, with Andy Bain just managing to edge out Murdoch Macdonald by two holes. With the tie all square after 16, Bain turned on the style to win the final two holes to secure the silverware.

In the senior gents’ final, club president Fred Groves claimed the glory in a keenly-contested battle with Andy Mackay.

Groves finished strongly to record a 3&1 victory in another tie which was closer than the final scoreline suggests.

On Saturday, players competed for the Parry Trophy.

Several excellent scores were recorded, with countback required to determine the outcome after Donald Mowat and Guy Owen both recorded nett scores of 66.

In the final analysis, Mowat got the nod following a tremendous round of gross 74.

The trio of Pete McCartney, Ian A. Mackay and Murray McGlasson finished a stroke further back after their respective nett 67s.

This weekend will see a strong field of players competing in the eagerly anticipated 36-hole Nuvia Reay Open. Late entries will be accepted until 7pm tonight by e-mailing colinfairmunro@googlemail.com
