Thurso Golf Club welcomed a far-travelled trio who set themselves the challenge of playing at the most easterly, southerly, westerly and northerly courses on the UK mainland.

The idea for the Four Point Compass Challenge came from Steve Titterington, marketing manager of Gorleston Golf Club, the UK’s most easterly course, in Norfolk.

It led to three Gorleston members – club captain Stuart Pearce along with Marie Norman and Ray Pope – embarking on a round trip of more than 2000 miles in under a week, starting on Sunday, May 21.

The southernmost point was Mullion Golf Club, on the Lizard Peninsula. Traigh, south of Mallaig, was identified as the most westerly course.

The golfers completed their challenge by playing a round at Thurso on Thursday, May 25, before setting off on their near-700-mile homeward journey the following day.

They were raising money for two good causes – the RNLI and a charity local to their own club – and visited the closest lifeboat station to each of the courses they played.

It is hoped the Four Point Compass Challenge will catch on and become the UK's golfing equivalent of the Three Peaks Challenge, which involves climbing the highest mountains of England, Scotland and Wales.
