Former Rangers and Scotland star Derek Johnstone is heading to Thurso this spring to take part in children's football coaching as well as a question-and-answer session in a local hotel.

Rangers Soccer Schools are teaming up with Thurso Football Academy to run the activities on April 2 and 3.

Coaching for youngsters aged five to 15 will take place at Thurso High School games hall and the Naver all-weather pitch, sponsored by GD Energy Services and supported by Thurso Active Schools. The coaching was sold out within 10 hours of being announced, with more than 60 children due to attend.

Rangers Soccer Schools provide coaching for children all over the world and were last in Caithness with Nacho Novo for a fun day in November. This time the star guest is Johnstone, a 1972 European Cup-Winners' Cup legend.

He will hold a question-and-answer session in the Park Hotel on the Thursday evening, sponsored by GDES, Robbie Fraser, Willie Lipka and Thurso Swifts, and this is also a sell-out.

Organiser Alyn Gunn, head of coaching at Thurso Football Academy, said: "I would like to put on record my thanks to the sponsors and the parents of the children who have booked the places up, as without them these events would not happen. Thanks also to Castletown FC, East End FC and Thurso United FC for their continued help and support.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for children in Caithness. To have coaching to a professional standard within Caithness is great, but to have a club as big as Rangers take their soccer schools this far north is quite a big thing to happen for the area.

"The children will have a great couple of days' coaching."
