A YOUNG local golfer won silverware at last week’s 10th Highland junior championships at the Spey Valley Golf Course in Aviemore.

Reay member Euan Munro topped the entry in the section for 9-16 handicap players with a round of 89, nett 77.

The Thurso High pupil took home the ClubGolf Shield after finishing three strokes clear of runner-up Kyle MacLeod, of Inverness Royal Academy and Loch Ness Golf Club.

Last year, Euan was invited to join a local athlete support group and began a strength and conditioning programme under the guidance of Thurso-based active sports co-ordinator Kenny Russell.

This also included golf-specific coaching with Reay Golf Club’s head coach Evan Sutherland through the Caithness Junior Golf Partnership.

Euan is one of half-a-dozen juniors selected for the SGU north district boys squad centred at Tain with PGA professional Stuart Morrison, who is also a Scottish Academy coach.

In winning the competition at Spey Valley, Euan is following in the footsteps of his older brother Ross.

Thurso High lost its Highland team title to Nairn Academy, with Inverness Royal Academy second and Golspie High School third. Forres Academy retained the Moray Schools team title.

Millburn Academy’s Jonathan Keith’s round of 78 won him the scratch competition while Shaun Hogg, of Alness Academy, won the 0-8 handicap with a 78, nett 73.

Carinne Taylor, of Forres Academy, had the best girls’ scratch score, with an 88, while Nairn Academy’s Abbie Cruden won the handicap section.

The event was run by Willie MacKay, of High Life Highland, who said: “It was a pleasure to witness the juniors take on the challenge of the Spey Valley championship course.

“The course was in fantastic condition and the event went very smoothly with a big thank you to staff and volunteer helpers who made the day possible.”
