The ladies course record was beaten at Thurso Golf Club as Laura Durrand shot an amazing 69 to win the Pendleton Plate.

It was one of two competitions running at the club last Tuesday, with the Committee Cup for the those with a handicap of 31 or more also taking place.

The Pendleton Plate, for those with a handicap of 30 or less, saw Durrand strike 69, for a nett 66.

It made her the first player – male or female – to score under 70 on the course this year and beat her own course record for the ladies, which she had only set two weeks earlier.

Her round started well with a birdie at the 1st but some poor shots around the green on the 3rd, leaving her with a double bogey, made it look like it was not going to be a round to remember.

However, perhaps it was just what she needed to settle her down as she immediately followed it with another birdie. Parring the next five holes meant she finished the first half in 35.

There seemed to be no stopping her in the second half where she had four more birdies, including one at the 12th where she drove to just two feet from the pin, leaving an easy tap in for a 2.

Again it could have all gone to pot at the last hole as her second shot went into the bunker, but she got it out easily and popped the putt in to finish with on 69, beating her precious record by two shots.

Fern Mackay was runner-up with a nett 67, beating Angela Williamson by the better inward half.

The winner of the Committee Cup was Isla Mackay, who had the round of her life. It was a bit of a shaky start but by the 4th hole she had warmed up and played steadily from then on. Pars at the 13th, 14th and 17th saw her finish on nett 63.
