Coach says she 'couldn’t be prouder' as Thurso Junior Open attracts a turnout of 48

Forty-eight young golfers competed in the Thurso Junior Open, sponsored by Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd and held in sunny conditions.

There were 11 juniors playing 18 holes off the medal tees. The girls' scratch title was won by Emma Durrand and runner-up was Isla Mackay.

The girls' handicap winner was in-form Fern Mackay, with Rachel Durrand as runner-up.

The boys' competition was close at the top with Tyler Gordon winning with a fantastic scratch score of 74, pipping Arran Johnson who had a 75. Third place went to Ben Durrand and Cameron Reid was fourth.

The handicap section was also very tight at the top with Owen Bain winning with a 65, one ahead of Dylan Mackenzie on 65, while Reece McKellar came third.

The prize for nearest the pin on the third went to Ben Durrand with a distance of two feet.

The seven-hole competition for the girls was won by Victoria Fryett and runner-up was Lily Moodie. Third place went to Zara Kirkwood, with Lucy Alexander fourth and Ella Munro fifth.

The boys' seven-hole competition was won by Jay Kirkwood and runner-up was Ethan Mackenzie. Harry Fulton came third, with Lee Bain fourth, while Jack Bremner and Jack Sinclair finished fifth equal.

The girls' three-hole competition was won by Skye Foubister, pipping Morven Munro on countback. Lexi Munro was third, followed by Lauren Tunn, Sophie Leslie and Rhea Cameron in fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively.

Ethan Gulloch came out on top in the boys' three-hole competition, with Kyle Rollinson and Finlay Calder second equal. Guy Bacon was fourth, Noah Elder was fifth and Ruairdh Macdonald took sixth place, while Ben Rollinson and Cameron Forbes were seventh equal.

Other placings went to Lachlan Forbes (eighth), Max Norwood (ninth), Struan Sparling (10th), Mackenzie Sutherland (11th), Jackson Weir (12th) and Lachlan Sparling (13th), with Brodie Cameron and James Struthers in joint 14th position.

Junior convener Laura Durrand said: “It was so nice to see all the juniors enjoying their day and having fun while playing golf. As a coach I couldn’t be prouder of all the kids.

“I have been junior organiser for 14 years now and seeing the kids progress to young adults and still enjoying golf is all I have ever wanted to achieve in this role.”
