There was a clear winner of the Thursday competition with ‘Sid’ Campbell being six points in front of his nearest rival.

Campbell went to the turn in two over par for 22 Stableford points. A further 21 points on the way back from a four over par nine holes provided a winning total of 43 points. The better inward half (BIH) was required to separate second and third after Clark Grant and Alan MacKenzie returned totals of 37 points.

Grant birdied the ninth after three no-scoring holes for 15 points on the first half. Grant’s 22 points on the inward nine holes comfortably surpassed Mackenzie’s 18. Innes Mitchell and Ali Simpson were next best with 35 points.

On the Friday, Paul Giggle and Bob Robertson tied for first place on 37 points. Robertson had halves of 20 and 17 points while Giggle did the reverse and therefore won by the better inward half. Sandy Reid took third spot with 35 points.

In a day dominated by the seniors, Ronnie Gray was pipped for fourth by Dougie MacKenzie after both accumulated 33 points.

Saturday’s competition was the Rugby Club Cup, played in teams of two with the better nett score at each hole counting. The honours went to the father and son combination of Sandy and Dougie Wright.

The Wrights had an average first nine holes of two under par 33 but found their wings over the second nine to fly home in 29, five under par, for a total of 62.

Ronnie Gray and Lennie Murray matched the 62-shot total but had their five under par run on the first nine holes and therefore lost out to the BIH. Three pairings – Pat Valentine and Stuart Bell, Lachie Sutherland and C Mauchlin, and Mick Ross and Alan MacKenzie all scored 63 and finished in that order.

Round three of the Ulbster Arms Challenge Shield was played on Sunday. Ali Simpson (18) and Stevie Cowie (8) both returned nett 70s, with Cowie also having the best gross score on the day. Simpson won by virtue of the BIH.

Harvey Cowe (10) and WJ Shearer (17) were next with scores of nett 72. Cowe got the nod for third place due to the BIH.

Prolonged overnight rain made life difficult for the few seniors who contested the seventh round of the EGGS Summer Eclectic on Tuesday.

Playing together, Ronnie Gray and Ivan Paterson both had 15 points for the front nine and were still close after 14 holes. But Gray kept plugging away and he won with 28 points to 25 by Paterson.

The ladies played their May Extra Medal on Tuesday, with the evening players getting the best of the weather. The competition was also the second qualifying round for the club championship.

Winner with a nett 71 was Eileen Manson who also had the best gross score. Anne Simmonite was second with a nett 76, one shot ahead of Jane Grant. Alice Fidler finished fourth.
