Caithness Krakens set sights on moving up
Caithness Krakens will make their first competitive appearance of the season on Saturday when they host Moray in Caledonian North League 2.
After their cup heroics at Murrayfield in their last campaign, it marks something of a return to auld claes and cauld porridge for Mike Flavell’s charges.
But the coach is keen they buckle down and set their sights firmly on progressing up the league pyramid.
Though missing out on automatic promotion after finishing second to Highland last term, Flavell hoped they might have been placed in the league above.
That would have been particularly welcome in that Caley 2 now comprises just four sides following the withdrawal of Stornoway.
“It means we only have six league games, which is not ideal but hopefully we will get a good cup run again.”
Flavell, who is again being assisted by Gary Mackay, said numbers at training have been building up, with the last couple of sessions each attracting 14 or so.
He is looking to draw on a pool of about 25, including several students/exiles who are dual registered and so available to strengthen travelling squads.
The Krakens will be without two of their more experienced players, Helen Richard and Emmie Smith, for Saturday’s clash, which has a 2pm kick off.
Moray opened their campaign on Saturday with a 31-5 defeat at home to Turriff.
