Is Matt Damon making an ‘Odyssey’ to Thrumster for Hollywood epic?

Local speculation was rife over whether Matt Damon was intending to visit Caithness this weekend after film crews were seen in the Thrumster area.

The celebrity actor is starring in The Odyssey, an upcoming epic action fantasy film written, directed, and co-produced by Christopher Nolan and was recently seen in Buckie and other areas of the north Highlands.

The 54-year-old, who is playing the starring role of Odysseus in the film, has been spotted in and around Moray on several occasions – with several people noting how friendly he was.

Filming on The Odyssey is taking place at several locations in Moray, including Burghead and Culbin Forest, with Damon first spotted not far from Findlater Castle, near Cullen, last week.

One Thrumster resident called the Groat to say film crews were “going up and down the road to Ulbster Mains farm” and that she had heard it was to do with the Christopher Nolan film.

However, when the paper received a contact number for one of the personnel connected to the film, she denied that the Caithness crew is in any way connected to The Odyssey.

“Sorry to disappoint you, but you’ve got the wrong film and it’s nothing to do with Matt Damon,” she said.

“It’s a debut feature film, and it’s the other end of the scale from the big Hollywood productions.”

She said that the crew will be shooting at various locations across Caithness. “It’s really lovely here, but it’s a pity the weather changes every five minutes,” she joked.
