There was good scoring in the Newsbeat Summer League at Thurso Golf Club.

Last Thursday, Ronnie Gray had to score 44 Stableford points to secure first place.

He played the first half of the course in level par for 23 points. There were three dropped shots in the back nine holes, yielding a further 21 points, in an excellent round of three over par.

Young Ross Munro had an equally impressive round of one under par, aided by a two-under-par inward half for 43 points and second spot.

Jim McLeod and Sandy Wright tied on 40 points, with McLeod’s second nine holes points total of 23 earning him third place.

George Munro, Harvey Cowe and Andrew Main all scored 39 points, one more than Jimmy Meiklejohn, Steve Spargo, Donald Sutherland and Bob Black. Keith Dreaves and Andy Macgregor both had 37 points. Not surprisingly, the standard scratch score reduced to 68.

On Friday, Alan Kennedy left the rest of the field trailing in his wake after returning a 40-point effort.

Jason Simpson, Angus Cameron and Malcolm Morrison finished in that order after they all scored 35 points.

With two rounds remaining, Gray has moved into second place in the league, tied with Ronnie Matheson on 296 points. Jocky Begg is still well out in front on 305 points.

Round one of the Freswick Cup was played on Saturday when the early starters got the best weather.

Bob Black is sitting in pole position after playing both halves of the course in 39 for a fine nett 65.

Cameron, along with Innes Mitchell, had the lowest gross on the day of 77 which converted to a nett 67 for second spot.

Pat Valentine played his usual steady golf for a nett 69, one shot better than Mitchell and Cowe. Ali Simpson, Gray and Ben Gordon are all handily placed on 71.

On Tuesday, the seniors found points more difficult to accumulate in comparison to recent weeks.

But Donald Jack managed to score at every hole in his round for a winning total of 35 points.

Peter Knight and Donald Farquhar both scored 34, with Knight taking the runner-up position after carding 18 points on the inward half.

Ronnie Mackay was next best with 33 points, one point more than George Mitchell. Malcolm Clasper was the only other player to score more than 30 points.

Jim Telfer remains in the lead for the Spargo Trophy, one shot ahead of Clasper.

Also on Tuesday, the ladies played for the Three Club Goblet. The winner was Anne Simmonite, with Jean Clasper in second place.
