THERE has been some excellent scoring at Thurso Golf Club during recent competitions, starting with the most recent Newsbeat Summer League rounds.

On the Thursday Kevin Morris started his round with seven pars for 21 Stableford points, before adding just one more point on his first half. He continued in a similar vein for his second half before failing to score at the last in an inward half of 21 points and a winning total of 43. I. Mitchell, Angus Cameron and Jocky Begg finished in that order after they all had 39 points.

Mitchell and Cameron both covered the back nine in 19 points but an ugly eight at the 16th enabled Mitchell to get the nod.

Ronnie Matheson and Hamish Boyd were on 38 points – one better than Peter Knight and Ali Simpson.

On the Friday the winning score of 37 points was returned by Jack Fidler. Andrew Richardson had 36 points, a point better than Eoin McIntosh. With three rounds remaining in the league, Begg is well out in front with 305 points.

Matheson is second with 296 points.

The men got the best of the weather for round nine of the Ulbster Arms Challenge Shield.

On a day of low scores, Angus Cameron came out on top with a nett 65 – one shot better than Jason Simpson.

Willie Shearer, W.J. Shearer and Alan Kennedy tied on 67 and finished in the same order after countback.

Walter Rutherford was on his own on 68, a shot ahead of Gary Leonard, Stephen King and Clark Grant.

With two rounds remaining in the eclectic competition for the challenge shield, Colin Mackay is in the lead on nett 60.

Roddy Harper is second on nett 61.5 with Cameron and Harvey Cowe joint third on nett 63.

The JGC Open was played when the better inward half was required to determine the winner after Cowe and Gavin Souter both had nett 64. Cowe took top prize, despite an eight at the 10th hole, after playing the back nine holes in five over par.

Rutherford was third with a nett 65 – one shot better than Simpson and Matheson, who had the best gross score of 71.

Michael Macgregor was on nett 67, with Ian MacDonald, Mark Mackay and J. Nicolson (Lybster) all on 68.

W.J. Shearer, Ronald Mackay and Leonard were a shot further behind. Last Tuesday the seniors continued the good scoring with John Morrison and Jack Johnstone tying with 39 Stableford points.

Johnstone had 23 points on the first half despite not scoring at the eighth hole which enabled Morrison to win due to the better inward half.

Alan Simmonite played steady golf for 37 points and third place; Ian Manson and Mackay both had 36 points, one ahead of Jim Hawthorn, W.J Shearer and Pat Valentine.
