Sam Mackay scored twice in the 3-2 win against Forres Mechanics.

Harmsworth Park hosted its first game in two months, but it was worth the wait.

Despite racing into a 3-0 lead, Wick Academy were left to hang on to pick up its 8th win in 12 games.

Title chasing Forres Mechanics were caught cold after 56 seconds when Ross Allan swung a ball in from the left wing for elder brother Davie to crash into the net.

Man of the match Sam Mackay doubled the home side's advantage three minutes before half time when a mix up in The Can-Cans defence allowed him to slot home from six yards.

Mackay got his third on 54 minutes when Grant Steven sent in a well timed pass from midfield for Mackay to slot past Stuart Knight.

Forres got back into the game eight minutes later when Kyle Scott opened the visitors account when he was met unchallenged in the box from a Neil Whyte cross.

Ross McPherson launched a 25 yard thunderbolt to give Michael Gray no chance three minutes before time to make it 3-2.

Forres then threw everything at their opponents and looked likely to get an equaliser in injury time.

But a goalline clearance from Sam Mackay and Nathan Sharp hitting the bar kept the three points in Caithness.

Post match reaction from Davie Kirkwood and Charlie Rowley in Wednesday's Caithness Courier.
