Wick Academy under-18s will be aiming to consolidate their position at the summit of SHFL Under 18 North when they take on lowly North West Skye this weekend.

The top-versus-bottom clash is scheduled for neutral Alness on Sunday, with an 11.30am kick-off.

The young Scorries took over at the top of the table after a 3-1 victory away to Lossiemouth at the end of December.

Academy have collected maximum points from their opening 13 league fixtures this season and are three points ahead of second-placed Balloan Thistle, who have played the same number of games.

North West Skye have yet to win, with two draws and nine defeats so far in the 13-team division.

Academy U18 coach Derek Shearer said: “Although North West Skye are bottom of the league, we’ll be treating the game exactly the same as any other. The priority is to get three points and to continue our run of form.

“There’s a long way to go in the season and we’re just taking it a game at a time and we’ll see where it takes us.

“The lads have been outstanding this season and their attitude towards training and games has been brilliant. It’s tough at this time of year, as holidays and weather have disrupted games and training, but every team will be in the same boat.”

Shearer added: “The forecast looks better for Sunday so the game should go ahead down in Alness. The 11.30 kick-off means it will be an early start for both teams.”

In their last outing, on December 29, the young Scorries had to come from behind against an improving Lossie side. The Wick scorers were Owen Bain, Matthew Robertson and John Hooker.

SHFL Under 18 placings: 1 Wick Academy (played 13, points 39); 2 Balloan Thistle (13, 36); 3 Clachnacuddin (14, 28); 4 Forres Mechanics (12, 27); 5 Alness United (12, 25); 6 Inverness Athletic (16, 23); 7 Buckie Thistle (15, 17); 8 Dingwall (9, 13); 9 Keith (15, 12); 10 Lossiemouth (14, 11); 11 Nairn County (16, 11); 12 Rothes (12, 4); 13 North West Skye (11, 2).
