There was no festive break for Wick Academy under-18s as they travelled to the Moray coast on the Sunday between Christmas and New Year to take on an ever-improving Lossiemouth side.

The young Scorries came from behind to win 3-1, a result that meant they ended 2024 in top spot in SHFL Under 18 North with maximum points from 13 fixtures.

Lossiemouth started well and had the ball in the net inside the opening five minutes only for it to be ruled offside. This didn’t deter the home side, though, and Samuel Dry pounced on a poor pass-back to put them ahead on the 10-minute mark.

Academy were struggling to get a hold on the game in their first outing since an away victory over Dingwall two weekends previously.

However, they got an equaliser on the half-hour mark when the Lossie keeper was unable to deal with a floated cross from Owen Bain which found its way into the net.

A strong start to the second half by the young Scorries saw them rewarded with a second goal.

Brilliant play by Joshua Hughes down the right flank led to him earning a free kick on the edge of the box. Bain delivered the ball to the near post and Matthew Robertson was on hand to force it home.

Lossiemouth’s Cameron Leil was shown a straight red for kicking out off the ball at Bain.

John Hooker made sure of all three points when he fired home with five minutes to go.

Coach Derek Shearer said: “The boys had to show character to come back from one down.

“It’s not easy trying to play a match in the Christmas holiday season. There were no training facilities open, we hadn’t played in two weeks, we had a long journey, a heavy grass pitch… all these factors can make it difficult, but the lads showed their quality.

“It took us 20 minutes to get going but once we did we deserved our win. I am so proud of them going into 2025 with maximum points from 13 games.”

Academy are now three points ahead of second-placed Balloan Thistle, who have played the same number of games.
