THURSO High School pupil William Campbell claimed four trophies as Bettyhill staged the annual Sutherland and Caithness Provincial Mod on Saturday.

The first-year student from Halkirk triumphed in the piping and accordion competitions, winning the under-14 march and Strathspey and reel, the under-16 pibroch and the secondary Gaelic airs and open accordion competitions.

Caithness was well represented at the all-day celebration of Gaelic music and culture with quite a few pieces of silverware returning east, past the Split Stone.

As well as trophy wins in the instrumental classes, there was Caithness success in the Gaelic language for Croileagan Inbhir Theorsa, Feis Ghallaibh’s senior folk group and Caithness members of Melvich Gaelic Choir.

The competitions were staged in Farr High School and the village’s Free Church hall.

A full round-up of the competition will appear in Friday’s John O’Groat Journal.
