Members of the public will be able to have their pictures taken in period costume when Wick Heritage Museum hosts its first New Year open day since before the pandemic.

There will also be a display by the Seafarers Memorial Group, an opportunity to identify teams and players in old football photos and a selection of tunes by local musicians as well as a chance to view the museum's extensive range of artefacts.

Visitors will be welcomed at the centre in Bank Row from 11am to 4pm on Monday, January 2, with free admission.

Wick Society trustee Ian Leith said: "Due to Covid restrictions, the New Year open day has had to be postponed for the past couple of years but our volunteers, conscious of how well received this event is with local people, have worked hard to set up several new and reworked displays.

"One of the most popular activities in the past was the opportunity to have a period costume photo taken in the Johnston photographic studio, and our Johnston photographic team will again be on hand to put you back in time.

"Within the Johnston collection are many photos of football teams, and local football historian Ken Wood will be on hand to help identify the clubs and players in these photos. Please come along and help Ken to identify the teams and the footballers.

"A huge amount of work has gone into preparing the way for the erection of a seafarers’ memorial in Wick. Members of the Seafarers Memorial Group will bring along a maquette of the chosen design and explain the work in progress.

"Several local musicians will be popping in to give us a few tunes. This is a wonderful New Year opportunity to catch up with friends."

The museum's last New Year open day, in 2020, attracted an attendance of more than 500 from the local area and beyond.
