Plans are being made to establish a literary association for the far north that will run book club sessions and a children’s writing competition.

A meeting is scheduled for Mackays Hotel in Wick on Saturday, March 15, starting at 11am.

The goals of the new Caithness and Sutherland Literary Association will be to run an annual writing competition for primary pupils; organise a book club to read and discuss classic literature; encourage libraries to have a “classics collection”; and foster a love of literature.

The man behind the idea is Eoghan Mhor, a former teacher who is now tutoring online.

“Promoting literature is very dear to my heart,” he explained. “If I can get a few like-minded people on board I can constitute an association a little more formally.

“That is a goal in itself, but it also opens the door to applying for funding.

“I loved the idea of a ‘classics collection’ at Thurso Library. There are some great classic books that deserve a permanent place on the bookshelf.

“I would also love to start a book club, reading classic books with like-minded bibliophiles.

“At present the proposal is that the writing competition will be for a short story ending with a proverb in the final sentence. Details are still to be worked on.”

There is an email address – CandS_LiteraryAssociation@hotmail.com – for anyone wishing to register an interest.
