An open day this weekend will give an insight into what it’s like to be part of Wick RBLS Pipe Band.

Members of the public will be able to find out how bagpipes and drums are put together, and to try a few instruments for themselves.

It is hoped some may even be inspired to take up playing and be able to join the band themselves one day.

The event takes place at the Pipe Band Hall in High Street on Saturday (September 28) from 2pm to 5pm.

Old pipe band photos will be on display, while tea and coffee will be served. There will also be a baking stall and a raffle.

Band secretary Helen Hill explained: “It’s for anyone of any age to come and see how the pipe band functions.

“The pipe major and hopefully the drum major will be there to give folk a bit of guidance. How do you join the pipe band? How do you learn an instrument? What’s the tartan of the pipe band?

“We’re also going to have a mannequin for people to dress in pipe band uniform. It’s got a kilt and a shirt on already – but can you put on a number one uniform with the feather bonnet and the plaid?”

Wick Pipe Band was formed in 1919. Its centenary celebrations five years ago included a massed pipe band event featuring musicians from Thurso, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Switzerland and Germany as well as local dancers.
