Cat owners are being warned of the potential risks posed by creels after a Wick family’s pet had to be rescued from one.

Ten-month-old Blu, owned by the Fell family, disappeared for three days and was eventually discovered trapped inside one of the many creels stacked on the town’s quayside.

Eswyl Fell and her husband Tony, who live close to the harbour, are keen to ensure other cat owners in coastal areas are aware of this possible hazard.

Eswyl, a retired teacher, explained: “It wasn’t unusual for Blu to stay out overnight, but after three days of searching in the local area, asking neighbours to look out for him, and a plea on Facebook, we were worried when he didn’t appear.”

A chance meeting with local businessman Colin Stewart, who mentioned that his cat had become stuck in a creel, led to the search being focused on the harbour area.

“When Tony shouted for the cat, a faint cry could be heard,” Eswyl said. “Three boys stopped to help and found Blu trapped in a creel.”

The cat was weak, hungry and tired, but recovered quickly from the ordeal – and is now restricted to the garden.

Eswyl added: “The family want to highlight the dangers of cats being stuck in creels and we have contacted Cats Protection. We would also like to thank the boys who helped in the rescue.”
