Village SOS could help revive North communities

FAR North villages could be given a massive helping hand to set up their own community-run business.

Funding initiative Village SOS is looking to award grants of between £10,000 and £50,000 to original community enterprises in villages or small towns with a population under 3000.

Village SOS is a partnership between the BBC, Big Lottery Fund and the Plunkett Foundation. The project began in 2010 when six rural villages in the UK won Big Lottery investment to revive their communities through new business ventures.

The progress of the villages was the subject of a BBC documentary series shown last summer.

The current round of Village SOS funding can pay for some or all of the cost for the first year of an original business enterprise.

Village SOS cannot contribute towards projects that will cost more than £100,000 (including VAT).

Applications must be in by 2pm on Wednesday, September 12, at the latest.
