TROLLEY dashing to catch a train with almost £580 worth of stolen goods, a Sutherland man narrowly avoided jail when he appeared at Wick Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

Jonathon Russell (30) of Fascally Cottages, Brora strolled out of the Co-operative store at Thurso Road in Wick on Monday, December 17 with a cart full of groceries.

With the assistance of another person, he pushed the trolley towards Wick Railway Station before then carrying the bags of groceries worth £577.27 on to the train to return back home.

Senior Fiscal Depute David Barclay told the court that the accused had left the premises without paying for the items and managed to get on board a train heading south which arrived at Brora Railway Station at 6pm.

Upon arriving at his destination, he was met by police officers who interviewed and arrested him.

The items that he had stolen were then returned to the supermarket in Caithness.
