PRIMARY five pupils at Hillhead Primary in Wick flew the flag in a completely new way after lifting this year’s school potato crop.

The red, white and dark blue potatoes allowed them to make an image of the Union flag.

During the spring the school planted a number of heritage potatoes, including some Shetland Black, Highland Burgundy, Salad Blue and Mr Little’s Yetholm Gypsy. These gave a variety of red, blue and purple colours to this year’s crop.

The heritage potatoes were of further interest to the class because a number of them also had strongly coloured red or blue flesh.

Each P5 pupil received a small bag of potatoes to take home and try.

Head teacher Ally Budge said: "We have grown potatoes in our school vegetable patch since it was established around five years ago.

"The royal wedding earlier in the year prompted a potato seed supplier to offer red, white and blue potatoes. We thought it would be an interesting and fun experience for pupils to plant these and see some of the diversity that exists within the potato world.

"They grew really well and this has been a popular activity with the pupils."
