THE SNP group on the Highland Council has urged the ruling administration to remove the jobs threat to 344 classroom assistants across the region.

It follows news the authority is likely to have substantial additional revenue funds of several million pounds at the end of the financial year due to a better-than-expected settlement from the Scottish Government.

Having raised the issue at the Highland Council’s meeting on Thursday, SNP group leader Councillor Drew Hendry said: "Basing a review on cutting classroom assistants has always been a desperately flawed idea, we need a review of what is required educationally, then we can look at how we provide the service. We will keep on at the Independent / Lib Dem / Labour administration to drop these harmful plans."

He added: "We would like the budget leader to use what is likely to be a relatively modest amount of these funds to retain these important jobs. Now is the ideal time to tell parents, teachers and children that there will not be a harmful reduction to support in their schools and that a fresh look will be taken at Highland education without the threat of staff cuts predetermining the issue."
